19th Century Italian Venetian Grotto Settee Attributed to Pauly et Cie
DESCRIPTION
19th century hand-carved exuberantly shaped Venetian “Mecca” (gilt-varnished silvered) and green-gray painted settee exhibiting triple sea shell seat, armrests in the form of dolphins and the legs shaped in the form of seahorse motifs in various forms. The subject of The Grotto remained popular in the 18th and 19th century In Europe. Starting, 1880 (onward), Pauly et Cie (Venice, Italy) was the leading manufacturer.
